The result is a mixture of airy, classical pieces and Ullman whistling complicated melodies with surprising accuracy Whistling was popular in the '30s and '40s and I really think it could be again I whistled a lot of Elvis tunes

Ullman hopes to bring whistling into the mainstream and wouldn't mind a big record deal, but knows he's got a long way to go I used to whistle at college parties with bands and stuff, and jazz bands, too I try to do a more difficult song after that so they know my range B

He's also puckered up for the "Today" show, CNN and National Public Radio I'm always glad to get a gig, mostly (because) whistling makes people happy And he's whistled "Happy Birthday" for about 200 people I use plain Chapstick and I don't drink a lot of water

Ullman spends at least three hours a day whistling Jazz is `(Take the) `A' Train' and pop is `Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad King's club in Memphis I've done a lot of jazz, though, and I whistled some blues songs at B Before a big concert I whistle like two to three hours a day

AP: Who buys your music?

Ullman: I think my market is other whistlers, people who know whistlers and people who like weird things I usually just call up conductors and see if I can perform with them

AP: What are your favorite tunes?

Ullman: Classical music, it's Mozart's oboe concerto

The "happy whistler," as he calls himself, whistled for President Bush in the Oval Office, has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and has whistled the national anthem at several NBA games com

His hobby even helped land him a job: during the final round of interviews, a company executive asked him and another finalist to whistle happywhistler As weird as it sounds, his hard work has paid off: Ullman, from Alexandria, Va One of my colleagues bought like 50 CDs for Christmas, because he said it was the one gift he knew no one would have

AP: Do you ever whistle at girls?

Ullman: Well, I'm a finesse whistler, not a power whistler

AP: Is there a way you keep in top whistling shape?

Ullman: There's no kissing 24 hours before a performance, but my wife is OK with that When I was a kid I delivered Long Island Newsday and I used to whistle on my route Q&A With Chris Ullman
Jan 29, 1:21 PM EST

Chris Ullman whistles while he works

AP: If you want to bring whistling into the mainstream, why not do some pop?

Ullman: There's the old adage `stick with what you know The other, of course, is `The Andy Griffith (Show)' theme song

â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?

AP: How long can you hold your breath?

Ullman: Almost 2 minutes, but it's more of a breath control thing Your spit becomes less viscous the more water you have and it's bad for whistling

AP: What would you like to do?

Ullman: I'd love to do a big CD with jazz tunes like `Mack the Knife,' or something where I could appeal to a pop audience Ullman performed an Italian aria â€â€? and was hired

AP: Can everyone in your family whistle?

Ullman: My brother and dad do, but my mom and sister can't

AP: How did you get your start?

Ullman: My dad used to whistle Gilbert and Sullivan tunes, and we listened to a lot of classical music and stuff Once I was on a date and I whistled `I Could Have Danced All Night' from `My Fair Lady' while we danced in a park somewhere

AP: What whistling requests do you get?

Ullman: `(The) Flight of the Bumblebee' is one, but I can't do it, because it's not melodic ' I know Mozart better than Britney Spears

AP: What's the longest amount of time you whistled?

Ullman: Five hours, on a pilgrimage to Graceland

His CD, "The Symphonic Whistler," is a collection of classical songs he performed with a symphony And I practice a lot When I do Mozart pieces with long runs, you've got to be able to finish without breathing I swear it's genetic or something It was very cute and romantic And while he drives, walks, bicycles and does the dishes However weird it is, people find it entertaining nonetheless ' I'm a big Deadhead

AP: Is it tough to get recognition?

Ullman: Outside of the one competition, there isn't really a way to get recognized , has won the national and international whistling contest four times, and was barred from competing because he won so frequently

On Broadway, Comden and Green (the billing was always alphabetical) worked most successfully with composers Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne and Cy Coleman

The best Comden and Green lyrics were brash and buoyant, full of quick wit, best exemplified by "New York, New York," an exuberant and forthright hymn to their favorite city

One of their biggest Broadway successes was "Applause" (1970), a show for which they wrote the book but not the lyrics

It was "On the Town," a musical comedy expansion of Jerome Robbins' ballet "Fancy Free," that introduced Comden and Green to Broadway in 1944 Yet even the songwriters' biggest pop hits â€â€? "The Party's Over," "Just in Time" and "Make Someone Happy" â€â€? were simple, direct and heartfelt

On film, their most celebrated work was the screenplay for "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), considered by many to be the finest movie musical ever made The two did an expert job tailoring the film "All About Eve" to the talents of Bacall

In 1953, they had another film hit with "The Band Wagon," starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse

It wasn't the only time they combined performing and writing, most notably in their two-person show "A Party with Betty Comden and Adolph Green," which was first done on Broadway in 1958 and periodically revived over the years The duo received Kennedy Center honors in 1991

Green died at his Manhattan home Wednesday night, his son, Adam, said Thursday " Russell scored a personal triumph as plain-Jane magazine writer Ruth McKenny That same year Comden and Green reunited with Bernstein on Broadway for "Wonderful Town," a musical version of "My Sister Eileen

A succession of collaborations with Styne followed including the 1954 Mary Martin "Peter Pan," in which they were brought in to augment an already existing score; "Bells Are Ringing" (1956), written specifically for Holliday; and "Do Re Mi" (1960), a raucous look at the jukebox industry that featured Silvers and comedian Nancy Walker He was 87

They won five Tony Awards, with three of their shows â€â€? "Wonderful Town," "Hallelujah, Baby!" and "Applause" â€â€? winning the top prize for best musical

The story of the silent movie industry's transition to talkies starred Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor Edie Adams was her winsome sister Eileen

The duo wrote lyrics and often the books for more than a dozen shows, many of them built around such stars as Rosalind Russell, Judy Holliday, Phil Silvers, Carol Burnett and Lauren Bacall Comden and Green wrote the book and lyrics, including two plum roles for themselves The story of three sailors on a 24-hour leave in wartime New York was tailor-made for the time

The music was by Bernstein, an old friend of Green's Broadway Lyricist Green Dies at 87

NEW YORK (AP) â€â€? Adolph Green, whose six-decade collaboration with Betty Comden helped create such joyous stage celebrations of New York as "On the Town" and "Wonderful Town" as well as the classic movie musical "Singin' in the Rain," has died A 1985 stage adaptation was not as successful, running less than a year And with Coleman, they wrote "On the Twentieth Century" (1978), which starred John Cullum, Madeline Kahn and Imogene Coca
